Understanding reiki
Reiki originated in Japan in the early twentieth century and is generally described by practitioners as an energy-based complementary practice. Sessions are typically quiet and noninvasive. Reiki is offered in private wellness settings and, in some places, alongside conventional supportive services.
What you may experience
A client usually remains clothed while lying or sitting comfortably. The practitioner places hands lightly on the body or holds them just above it in a sequence of positions. Sessions commonly emphasize rest and relaxation rather than physical manipulation.
Common reasons people explore reiki
- relaxation
- stress relief
- comfort and supportive care
- personal or spiritual wellness
Evidence & context
Research has not established a specific energy mechanism for Reiki, and evidence is not sufficient to support Reiki as a treatment for disease. Some people report relaxation or a subjective sense of well-being, which should be distinguished from claims of treating medical conditions.
Safety & questions to consider
Reiki is generally noninvasive, but it should not replace evidence-based diagnosis or treatment. Practitioners should not advise clients to delay or discontinue necessary medical care.
This guide is educational, not medical advice.
Yoga Pagoda is a discovery and information platform, not a medical provider. Inclusion of reiki in our directory does not mean Yoga Pagoda endorses the practice, a practitioner, a treatment or a health claim. The level of scientific evidence, regulation and professional standards can differ substantially among wellness practices and jurisdictions.
Use this guide as a starting point. For health decisions, consider independent evidence, practitioner qualifications, risks, alternatives and advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional when relevant.
